So while cats perceive the world differently to ourselves (smell and body language is more important to them), and while their brain works in a different way to us (they have a smaller cerebral cortex so presumably they think and worry less than we do), they can still suffer from grief when separated from loved ones and, as you have found, a photograph can be enough to provoke an emotional reaction.
