If you have a "valued shopper" loyalty card for a grocery store, they use that card to build a shopper profile about you so they can target "suggestive sell" to you. Eat at McDonald's? Ordering something that can come in a combo with fries and a Coke? The first thing out of the cashier's mouth is "would you like that as a combo?" If you say "yes", they then ask if your drink of choice will be a Coke. That's another form of suggestive selling. Shop on Amazon alot? Amazon tracks what you buy and shows you similar items you might be interested in looking at. Return a lot of stuff? The stores're watching you. What you've bought, what you tend to return and for what reason you return it. It's not just the government we should worry about with programs such as PRISM, we should more accurately worry about EACH OTHER. It all began with security cameras and only keeps getting worse every time technology advances beyond what it had been capable of previously. |
