I don’t think you or the author of the quote are wrong, and I don’t disagree with you. But I also see no mechanism for achieving the goal of redistribution within a sustainable economy that you set. None. In theory, an enlightened elite might set up a Green, Fordist, and social democratic political economy that allows them to retain certain perks and advantages but brings society to a stable condition of zero population growth (that would have to be part of the equation, and liberals hate that idea with a passion) where the rich are no more than 10 times richer than the poorest worker, and work is guaranteed. Could the elite pull that off? Maybe, with incredible opposition from the rest of society. It would not be a democratic choice. It would have to be forced down the throats of millions, and in some places face armed opposition.
