In the past six months her job has taken her from New York to Dublin to the south of France. This week, the daughter of a teacher and the writer and journalist, Tim Devlin, has just returned from a trip to Milan with long-time client Kanye West, where she has been working on the set design for the hip-pop mogul’s forthcoming tour. “Kanye knows what he wants every minute,” she smiles, drawing her bare feet onto the sofa in the house she shares with her husband, the costume designer Jack Galloway, above the studio. “But every minute that evolves. And the speed of his mind is faster than the speed of my ideas, which does lead to fights. I have no doubt there will be plenty more over the next few months,” she shrugs, “because the man is a genius and a perfectionist and the world of material objects often fails to live up to his expectations.” Creating a world that does live up to her clients’ expectations is what Devlin does best. As Jay-Z, another of Devlin’s collaborators, always tells her: “Difficult takes a day, impossible takes a week.” |
