It authorised the purchase of 74 square miles of coastal grass, lagoon and sandbank that protruded like a fingertip into the Gulf of Mexico. The site was the wintering grounds for the survivors and proved to be just enough at the eleventh hour. It has since acquired fame as the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. |
