Hilary, herself a weaver who had contributed to the Royal Festival Hall and the Charlton Heston film Ben-Hur, presented some of her own collection and other villagers followed suit. The holdings have now snowballed so that all Ditchling’s artistic inhabitants are represented, alongside their looms, tools and presses. The result is a perfectly focused snapshot of a fascinating phase in our cultural history. “The only thing we crucially lack is an Eric Gill sculpture from his Ditchling years,” the museum’s director, Hilary Williams, told me. |
