Lummis defined oral history — or “oral evidence”, as he preferred to call it — as first-hand experience recalled retrospectively and shared with an interviewer for historical purposes. He was an exponent of “history from below”, believing that oral history offered a way of drawing on experience of the past from working-class witnesses who may not have wanted (or, in some cases, been able) to write down their recollections. |
