I didn't want to give you a half-answer, so I put your question to my colleague in London Luke Harding who was part of the inner team at the Guardian who worked on the WikiLeaks publications that we initiated. Here is Luke's answer to your question: "the Guardian and its international partners were scrupulous about redacting the identities of anyone we felt might be at risk from having talked to US diplomats. principally this meant sources in less free parts of the world or areas of conflict eg the post-Soviet Union, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. there is no evidence that anyone was killed as a result of these disclosures. so it's a stretch to blame Manning for something that didn't happen - with even US state department acknowledging that the damage to US diplomacy from the leaks was less than expected, and in many ways showed US diplomats and their field reporting in a good/favourable light". |
