The 15-minute 'Gesang der J체nglinge' (Song of the Youths) which opened the concert suffers doubly perhaps. An early work from the mid-50s, it fuses recordings of a boy’s voice with electronic effects to create something at once alienating and comforting, austerely technological and strangely natural. But the sound effects of a thousand bad sci-fi films have rendered its sound world dated, replacing a bracing sense of experimentation with myriad hackneyed associations. |
