The porpoise, a close relative of the dolphin but distinct from it (they’re smaller, with shorter noses and different teeth), takes its name from porcus, Latin for “pig” – dolphins and porpoises were often referred to as “sea pigs”, though nowadays the name is more correctly applied to a fairly repulsive relative of the sea cucumber. A guinea pig is “morskaya svinka” – a sea pig – in Russian. |
