Rather than the predictable jump to Radeon HD 8000-series cards (as the company has already done with its latest refresh of its laptop graphics chipsets), AMD’s new desktop cards will bear two new line names: Radeon R7, and Radeon R9. The Radeon R7 family name will adorn cards that range from mainstream to midrange (that is, under $199), and the Radeon R9 will signify the pricier enthusiast line, starting with the $199 Radeon R9 270X, and eventually ramping up to a promised Radeon R9 290X. The Radeon R9 280X we’re looking at here falls between those two, and stock versions of it are expected to sell for $299 in a 3GB memory configuration. AMD expects Radeon R9 280X-based cards to be on sale from various third-party card partners by Oct. 11, 2013. |
